Basic details

Name: Torreón de Peñerudes (Peñerudes Keep)
Description: Peñerudes Keep, considered Historical Monument, has its origin in the High Middle Ages (12th century). It doesn't remain complete, it is in ruins, but it doesn't show signs of collapse. It is of quadrangular plant, its walls are almost two meters and a half thickness and approximately 17 m of height. In its interior it can be observed the marks of the socket of the joists that were dividing the tower in three floors. As for its external aspect, we can indicate that it lacks the south facade of the building and it preserves completely the north wall and a good part of the rest of the walls. It is believed that it might have been a former defensive tower that was protecting this access way to the centre of the Principality. It might be of Roman origin reformed by the king Ordoño I and successors.
