Basic details

Name: Protected Landscape in the Coal-mining Area (Cuencas Mineras)
Description: The Protected Landscape in the Coal-mining Area (Cuencas Mineras), declared as such on March 14th 2002, embraces the high areas of the following councils: Mieres, Aller, Langreo, Laviana and San Martín del Rey Aurelio. The environment which is nearer Mieres is located at the head of Turón Valley, in the south-southeast edge of the council. The valley has an approximate area of 50 square kilometres, while the protected landscape reaches in full 100 square kilometres. The urbanized areas that this region covers are characterized by having had a great industrial and mining activity. So that is fraught with an irreparable damage to the almost natural landscape. Therefore, through this cataloging, they are trying to improve and, above all, to preserve those values that despite that great activity have endured until now.
